The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) agency, USA, recommends ‘Anti-Rollover Technology’ for All Vehicles by 2012.
It is estimates that ESC (electronic stability control) could save between 5,300 and 10,300 lives annually and prevent between 168,000 and 252,000 injuries with this technology. It is also said that Anti Rollover Technology will prevent between more than 4,200 of the more than 10,000 deaths that occur each year due to rollover crashes in United States.
According to NHTSA 1,575,000 accidents annually are caused by distracted drivers; a large percentage of these accidents involve unintended lane departures or rollover of the vehicle.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, administrator, Nicole Nason, told a congressional budget panel that “Electronic stability control” technology would be mandated on all new passenger vehicles by 2011.
It is said that Anti-rollover technologies could reduce more than 43,000 traffic fatalities in the U.S. annually. When a driver loses control of the vehicle and automatically applies brakes to individual wheels, Electronic stability control senses it and helps make vehicle stable and avoid a rollover.
ESC systems use automatic computer-controlled braking of individual wheels to help the driver maintain control in situations where a vehicle without ESC would skid out of control and likely leave the road.
Since 2004, the NHTSA has urged automobile companies to voluntarily add ESC as standard equipment on all vehicles. As a result, almost 29% of all 2006 models are already equipped with ESC feature. Many vehicles, including sport utility vehicles (SUV), already have the ESC technology and several automobile companies have begun announcing their plans to include the technology in the near future.
